Across the country, and especially in Wisconsin, Black and Brown families face unequal experiences and outcomes during pregnancy and birth. These disparities are not the result of individual choices. They are the result of systemic inequities, bias in medical settings, and a lack of culturally relevant support. This is why culturally grounded doula care is not just helpful. It is essential.

A sense of safety that comes from shared understanding

Families who work with a doula of color often describe a unique sense of comfort. A shared cultural background or lived experience builds trust quickly. This helps the birthing person feel safe to express their needs, fears, concerns, or questions without worrying about judgment.

This emotional safety can reduce stress, which directly supports healthier pregnancies and births.

Better communication in medical settings

Black and Brown families report more experiences of dismissal, rushed care, or being ignored when expressing pain or concern. A culturally grounded doula strengthens communication by helping families speak up, ask questions, and understand their care.

They also help families recognize when something does not feel right and need to be addressed immediately.

Support that respects identity, culture, and community

Culturally grounded doulas understand the traditions, values, and expectations that may be important during pregnancy or birth. They support the whole person, not just the medical side of childbirth. They honor family involvement, spiritual needs, food traditions, and postpartum rituals that help support healing.

Guidance that reduces fear and uncertainty

For many Black and Brown families, medical systems can feel stressful or intimidating. A doula provides consistent reassurance, evidence based information, and a calm presence. This builds confidence and helps families feel more in control of their birth experience.

Why WIDOCC’s approach matters

WIDOCC was created to address the urgent need for culturally grounded support in Wisconsin. Our doulas are trained to listen deeply, advocate with respect, and uplift families through every stage of their journey.

Culturally grounded doula care does not just make families feel better. It helps create safer births, healthier families, and stronger communities.
